June is Pride Month, which is dedicated to the celebration of LGBTQ+ individuals and affirmation of their rights. The concept of Pride began after the Stonewall Riots in June 1969, when members of the gay community protested a police raid in Lower Manhattan. The first Pride march was held in NYC one year later, and Pride month was first recognized on the federal level in 1999 by President Bill Clinton.
The Pulse Night of Remembrance, June 12th, is an annual commemoration of the day in 2016 when a mass shooting occurred at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killed 49 people and injuring 53 others.
