The monthly plate collection theme for March is Hunger and this Sunday’s collection will benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank. As prices continue to rise, food insecurity in MA increases, with an incredible 1 in 3 households reporting not having enough money to buy food each month. These families make trade-offs all the time—food or paying utility bills, getting medical care or being able to buy their child a birthday present. The Greater Boston Food Bank has been inundated with requests for assistance. It’s not just about the quantity of food that places like the food bank distribute. It’s also about the quality of that food. Unhealthy diets—which are cheaper—take a toll on both children and adults, leading to higher rates of chronic illnesses like Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The food bank is doing what it can to provide more fresh produce and dairy products, but this, of course, increases their costs. Those of us who have plenty to eat need to support those who are struggling.
